Peak union density was 1954: 35% AFL & CIO merger was 1955. It's been more or less downhill ever since. (Could that simply be a spurious association?)

For anyone who wants it, I have a chart of overall, public, and private sector union density from 1900 to 1997 that I can provide as an attachment. It is in .bmp format.

In solidarity, Michael
