As part of our discussion on education in labor movement I thought folks might like to see the education workshops that will be taking place at the upcoming UE Convention. One day is set aside for workshops and each delegate attends a morning and afternoon session.
Morning Session
_____1. Bargaining for Temporary Employees
Strategies for fighting the growing management effort to hire temporary workers and keep them out of the bargaining unit. Led by UE Field Organizer Paul Ryan.
_____2. Inspecting Your Workplace
How to identify and respond to potentially dangerous or unhealthy workplace practices. Bring your latest health and safety problems and we will discuss together what to do about them. Led by UE Health and Safety Consultant, David Kotelchuck (from Hunter College in New York) who will draw upon the latest technical information.
_____3. Educating Our Members
Confronting and dealing with member to member sexual harassment, discrimination or other forms of abusive behavior. What is the Union's role in dealing with abusive behavior when it happens within the bargaining unit? Led by UE International Representative Dave Cohen.
_____4. Strategic Planning for Local Unions
How to think like an organizer. Planning campaigns and using fightbacks and workplace struggles to strengthen the local union. Led by UE International Representative Carol Lambiase.
_____5. Arbitration
How to thoroughly plan and prepare for the best possible case while avoiding the pitfalls of arbitration. Led by UE International Representative Steve Tormey.
_____6. Dealing with Company Team Concept Programs
Confronting and dealing with company Team Concepts. What is the Union's role? Led by Charley Richardson, Director of the Technology and Work Program at the University of Massachusetts and Al Hart, UE Field Organizer.
_____7. Planning for the Labor Party Convention
Discussion and analysis of bigger questions that will be facing Labor Party Convention delegates. Led by Ed Bruno, former UE Director of Organization and current full-time Labor Party organizer.

OSHA has plenty of cooperative and consultative programs for employers. What about consulting with workers and unions? Why isn't OSHA simply enforcing the laws? Dealing with cell manufacturing, automation, and other new manufacturing methods in the workplace. How should the union respond to changes in workplace technology. _____6. Trade Union Response to Hate Groups
What should union members do when hate groups (KKK, Nazis, etc.) target their community or workplace - or - when their co-workers are victims of hate crimes? Led by Mia Giunta, a former UE organizer and Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Network of Unity Coalitions,this workshop will provide answers to those and related questions.
