A few years ago when I was visiting Berkeley, my host enthused about Alice Waters' conviction that growing exotic lettuces would transform the consciousness and life circumstances of the urban poor.

What I've heard - Patrick? Chuck? Jordan? Kirsten? - was that Berkeley's older poor, unable to afford the new food regime, ride the bus for an hour or more to Oakland to shop.
