Marx "admired" Darwin; Gould admires Marx

Amazing. He's like the American JBS Haldane. Now I like him even more than more.

His celebrity status is so large. He is a very authorized wise guy. I cannot think of another known Marxists on his level.

It seems he could do an enormous service in making Marxism respectable to his fans.

I wonder if there is any doubt on this thread that Marx respected Darwin. Even if there was some confusion on their communication, it seems that there is still evidence of some, and that Marx thought that Marx and Engels considered that Darwin used their method in natural history to some extent. Now a great naturalist and Darwinist of our time, Gould, admires Marx to that extent that he is a Marxist. And Gould has more fully Marxified Darwin's evolutionary theory. This seems a rather profound corroboration of dialectical materialism in a sister science from history.

Hurray for Comrade Gould !

I don't think there is anything particularly "underground" about Stephen Jay Gould's Marxism. As a "red diaper baby" he has long been active on the left. Back in the 1970s he was a prominent activist in groups like "Science for the People." He has on occasion in his column in *Natural History* referred to his Marxism and he in fact is a member of the editorial board for the journal *Rethinking Marxism.*
