There are substantial institutional blocks to 3rd (and beyond) parties in the U.S., ranging from the way that Congress formalizes the two-party system (they didn't know what to do with Sanders, so he "affiliated" with the Dems). The majority/minorty system, committee assignments, etc., all treat the Dem/Rep binary as if it were hardwired into the system. Also, lots of states - and New York is the worst of the 50 on this - make it difficult to get on the ballot, even for insurgent members of established parties.
