Servants and feminism

Is it worse to hire a poor woman as a servant than to enjoy the commodities that she would produce as a low wage worker?

I saw an interesting review of a book called Servant in a Box (????) on the Economic History site (eh.org). It discussed the creation of Aunt Jemima who was to be a virtual servant to make your pancakes. The product was marketed to flatter women who bought the stuff that they had a servant at their disposal. --
