Wagner and Nietzche, 'twixt land and sea

Music is indeed the savior of civilization. Suddenly, everybody's post seems to come alive from your mention of Wagner in passing. There is much in your post that I find very enlightening. The point you made about land and sea cultures, though thought provoking, may not have any empirical support. Japan, a nation with a heavy fascist history and tendencies, is not a landed nation. The Scandinavian countries, which have a strong socialist tradition are not landed cultures. Nietzche's falling out with Wagner over Parsifal had much to do with Wagner's turn towards Christianity away from the heroic self confidence of the superman as a redeemer of a European culture corrupted by religion. Many modern Chinese intellectuals appreciate Nietzche because of his view of religion as a corruption of the human spirit and potential. They borrow this self-reliance spirit of daring to be true to oneself as an intellectual tool against all controlling Confucianism.
