In the run-up to the Gulf War, I interviewed former CIA director Stansfield Turner on the radio. I asked him what the U.S. would do if it "won." He said he had no idea, and didn't think anyone in the Bush administration did either. It seems useful for both domestic and international politics to have a country you can pound now & then just to show everyone you can. Now Clinton & Giuliani can go on about the terrorist threat and get us more used to genuflecting to authority.
