Well, the problem is that the above does _not_ go without saying (except on left-wing e-lists) in America, and that's what Lou P was pointing out. When a right-winger goes after minor inaccuracies in a left-wing account, the effect that he tries to achieve is to obscure--if not fully discredit--the larger and more fundamental truth that such accounts as Menchu's are meant to convey.
BTW, Michael Moore's _Roger & Me_ was also attacked for its many "factual inaccuracies" and "misleading presentation," of which many articles have been written. Questions about documentary truth may be raised in the interest of truth and justice, in which case such questions are valid; however, when obsessions with accuracy of minor points are promoted by right-wingers so as to lead people to miss or "forget" the larger picture--in Menchu's case the political repression and massacres in Guatemala, and in Moore's case the disposability of workers under capitalism--it is incumbent upon us to criticize the manner of questioning.
