ny neighborhoods (was gm strike)

my neighborhood (north of washington heights) Inwood has been through some
incredible ups and downs since I moved here 21 years ago.  For a number of
years, many of the stores on 207 st. were boarded up.  Now, not only are all
the stores open, but many of them are Hispanic owned with a few Asian owned
businesses thrown in (take out food, fish store, nail salon).  What's
interesting is that things seem to be improving up here without the usual
gentrification problems of getting rid of all the local (read non-white, non-
english speaking) residents.
