One of the coauthors of the book in question, Oleg Gordievsky, was a high level official in the KGB who defected to the UK. There have been a lot of books by such defectors with many of them not panning out in terms of credibility over the long term, e.g. the book by "atom spy master" Sudoplatov who claimed that everybody from Bohr to Oppenheimer was a Soviet agent. He seems to have been out to make some money in the post-Soviet era with sensationalist charges.

No, we are not talking about somebody claiming alien abductions. Among other things, the Andrew-Gordievsky book was the first to identify the "fifth man" among the Cambridge spy crowd (led by Kim Philby). The fourth man was the queen's art adviser, Anthony Blount. The fifth man was John Cairncross, brother of the economist Alec Cairncross. This has since come to be more or less universally accepted as fact.
