reported earnings are capped in the public-use files for the monthly census population survey. before 1984, they were capped at $75K; since then they have been capped at $100K, so incomes above $100K are reported at $100K. this does cause some problems for computing gini indexes, but there are ways to account for it. see jared bernstein and lawrence mishel (of epi) "has wage inequality stopped growing?" mlr dec. 1997: 3-16.
