There's an interesting cover story in the currrent New Republic
(unfortunately!). The Democratic party hopes to retake congress by
running lots of pro-life, pro-gun, death-penalty-loving,
conservative-on-just-about-every-issue  big-money  just-like-republican
candidates. In several cases, the party has muscled aside more liberal
candidates in the primaries in order to promote the
republican-look-alike. Then they strongarm donations from liberal PACS.
The idea seems to be retake congress, get the speakership and
chairmanships back and then....?

  And who is funding these candidates?  the AFL-CIO!
