I do not know what you mean by "get anything done" - but if that means "building modern industry and industrial infrastructure" - without the _heavy_ public sector involvement any national economy would look like Ethopia or Somalia - where private parties run the country.
Anyone saying otherwise must be either joking or inhaling heavily.
