left conservatism

i agree with william. a couple other points:

1. an ontology (or a post-ontology) is not a politics. never has been, never was. that it might have a political dimension is another matter. (see, for example bourdieu on heidegger.) this whole left conservatism business is an academic debate (post-structuralism is no longer popular! no one wants to hear me deconstruct anything anymore!) dressed as a political one.

2. contrary to brown, scientific conceits frequently _do_ make them effective--and therefore provisionally "true." the AIDS virus can be _scientifically_ and _medically_ managed, for a privileged few, however pernicious and ideological those evil AIDS researchers language is. that AIDS cannot be managed socially is evident; that one's ability to survive it depends how much available cash one has is also evident; deconstructing the language of medical science won't change that (look, those scientists are using tropes! it's a performance! quick, let's deconstruct it so it won't go any further!)

3. yes, appearances are everything. there is no privileged appearance. everything's a sign, and all signs in the end, are exchangable. so perhaps wendy brown and judy butler pay for their shoes with rocks? (hey, it's a sign, just as good as any other! if we all just deconstruct money together, it will be fabulous!).

gawd. what a travesty.
