I don't see independent and collective as mutually exclusive. One of the myths of the left, it seems to me, has been that the state embodies the collective will, whereas in fact state-led reforms have more often led to atomisation and isolation (I'm thinking of the welfare state experience in Britain). -- Jim heartfield
