If you read Norman Schwazkopf's autobiog. he makes it clear that the
choice of Iraq as enemy number one was precisely because of the
disorientation of the US' battle plans after the collapse of the USSR.
With astonishing bluntness Schwarzkopf explains that the threw away one
set of battle plans - with the USSR as the target - and dusted off his
own Middle Eastern strategy with Irag standing in as the Evil Empire.
>From this cynical manouevre, the hapless ex-CIA agent Saddam Hussein was
volunteered for the role.
