************************************************************************ CALL FOR PAPERS ************************************************************************
IBG/RGS Conference, 5-7 January 1999, Leicester.
The Social and Cultural Geography Research Group and Political Geography Research Group are delighted to announce the following full day session to be convened at the 1999 IBG/RGS Annual Conference:
'Alternative Futures'
Since the 1960s Western society has witnessed the rise in alternative social, political, and economic movements. From utopian visions of society to strategies of coping with the grim realities of life in the late twentieth century a diverse set of alternative futures have been forwarded.
This session will critically explore:
1. the spatialities of these movements;
2. the geographies they hope to create and sustain;
3. the role of academia/geographers within/outside these
alternatives.
As such, it expected that papers might address themes of alternative social movements, identity politics,resistance, direct action, alternative political futures (especially given the seeming breakdown of the left project), and alternative economic landscapes (esp. relating to personal finances).
Contributions from those interested/practising from outside the academy are also especially welcome.
Abstracts (200 words max), to be submitted by 15th July 1998, should be sent to either:
Rob Kitchin, School of Geosciences,Queen's University of Belfast,BT7 1NN.
Duncan Fuller, Division of Geography and Environmental Management, Lipman Building, University of Northumbria at Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8ST)
