I had figured this one out on my own some time ago, but there was a major article in today's Washington Post Business Section about it. One point from that article is that most people in Europe are simply not dealing with this conundrum at all, although there is a growing call coming from information systems types to delay the introduction of the euro, because, hey, 2000 can't be delayed.
