I think Moore's politics are self-consciously personalized and and underdeveloped. He knows that raising deeper points is a sure killer for audiences (esp the Remy crowd).

Speaking of self-conscious, there's a James Atlas piece about "falling down" in the latest New Yorker. Now here's a guy from Harvard who is befuddled by the fact that a friend of his has mad it in Hollywood, and he's only a non-A list literary small fry. Hmm...
