One thing that strikes me: charged with changing the world, lefties of all kinds are always griping about problems, focussing on conflict, and critial of parsimonious versions of things (general equilibirium models, "human interest" stories on girbles when basic coverage of the human condition is absent, etc.).

And if others don't see it and aren't sufficiently morose, they're victims of false conciousness, etc. OK, overstated, but you all -- like myself -- have probabaly been, and/or been around, such people at points in your life.

Part of the work of changing the world is painting a picture of how fucked up it is. Usually, the mode of narration (story telling, picuture painting) is gloom and doom (as Bermann noted re: M/E). How to balance this?
