I remember hearing about a Brookings Institution conference in the early
1980s at which an outraged German Right Social Democrat type--Ralf
Dahrendorf, former dean? director? chancellor? rector? head honcho? at the
London School of Economics--stood up and yelled at the Americans who were
focusing on high European unemployment that he "...would much, much rather
be unemployed in Germany than poor in America!"
