Mike makes a very important point. For example West Virginia would still be part of Virginia if the people of West Virginia had not opposed slavery and remained loyal to the union.

An interesting side-light to the above: If one of your ancestors was in a West Virginia Regiment in the Civil War. The West Virginia state archives in Charleston has thousands of unclaimed civil war medals. All you need do is visit the state archive website and do some paperwork to get your ancestors medals. This process is not advertised,possibly because it upsets historical revisionists.
