Michael,

I question your argument that speculation arises from "leading the good life" monopolistic firms whose profits are declining due to rising X-inefficiencies. What evidence do you have for this? Certainly some speculation arises from takeover raids. But the takeover raiders and merger activists are rarely the fat and complacent types.
