According to Chomsky (and others), Castro was anti-Communist for the first few years after the revolution. Castro new of Kennedy's invasion plans and turned to the USSR for defensive purposes.

A big dissident roundup occurred right before the Bay of Pigs, presumably to prevent internal support for the exiled Cuban invaders.
