Agreed. And that the whole point of choosing pop/rock idols is to choose your own--and those that come recommended by a previous generation come off, f'r chrissakes, like fuddy-duddies or worse. I'm 30 and I don't particularly need to hear Chrissie Hynde ever again, so I can imagine how an acual young person feels about it.
Also: Nathan pointed out that many pop/rock cultural icons are, in effect, manufactured by men in the first place--Elvis, Beatles, Sex Pistols etc.--but (gather 'round grandpa's rocking chair, children) my punk rock roots lead me to think that those that did it themselves, sans impresarios--Hank Williams, Black Flag, Black Sabbath, and throw Bikini Kill in there for sure--had the better idea. It's a mistake to assume that rock's cultural importance only happens when guided by some managerial type.
Anyway, wait a few years for the more feminist minded 8-year old Spice Girls fans to discover their generation's take on Bikini Kill.
