What about the _Grundrisse_?  The Foreword to the 1973 Penguin ed (first
full English translation; the _Formen_ were available in an earlier
edition introduced and annotated by Hobsbawm) by Martin Nicolaus is itself
also required reading. As Nicolaus writes in the Foreword, "The
_Grundrisse_ challenges and puts to the test every serious interpretation
of Marx yet conceived."  David McLellan (somebody mentioned) has also
written on the importance of the _Grundrisse_, and this and his other work
is recommended (_Marx's Grundrisse_, 1971; a chapter in Walton and Hall's
_Situating Marx_, 1972; also for the bio, his _Karl Marx: His Life and
Thought_, 1973).
