Nation Squib on CPI Seems to Be Old Hat

This 0.2% adjustment is not new, it's old (well, news in Barron's last May 18). The change is to take effect in 1999. The adjustment is to CPI-W. The complete story is at

http://stats.bls.gov/cpigm01.htm "Announcement of planned changes in the Consumer Price Index formula"

We had already discussed this in soc.retirement months ago. We were suspicious about the validity of the adjustment, and I guess we still are.

My guess is, The Nation just learned of it, and made the mistake either of thinking it is a new threat, or did not make clear this is old.

Thanks, everybody, for the help.
