Michael A. Copp, 18, ran up a bill of more than $2,500 with just two purchases: $16.48 for dinner at Old Country Buffet and $2,496 for breast enlargement surgery at the Center for Orthopedic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Elyria, said Sheffield Lake Police Sgt. Jerry Paysor. "We get a lot of misuse of credit cards (violations),'' Paysor said. "But we've never had anything of this nature.'' Copp is currently in the Sheffield Lake City Jail and will be arraigned today in Lorain Municipal Court. He is charged with misuse of a credit card, which is a felony in this case because of the large amount charged on the credit card, Paysor said. Copp confessed to Sheffield Lake police after his mother, complained to police yesterday morning about charges on a Mastercard account she had closed in May. The mother told police she closed the credit card account because her son had previously run up a bill of $2,100 to pay for car repairs, Paysor said. Copp was picked up by police on a traffic violation warrant yesterday. In a written statement, he confessed that he reopened the closed credit card account using his mother's personal information without her knowledge, police said. Copp also confessed to paying for the breast enlargement surgery, Paysor said. Copp's 18-year-old girlfriend has not been charged in relation to the credit card purchases, Paysor said. Police suspect she may have helped her boyfriend reopen the account, but Copp told police he acted alone. Often, items purchased with a stolen credit card are confiscated and returned by police, but Paysor said Sheffield Lake police will not be involved this time. "That is between Mastercard and the victim,'' Paysor said.
