<p>Last week the President held a Conference on Social Security and it is expected to be
the topic of much debate and legislation in the next session of the U.S. Congress. This is
the first in a series of InfoFAXes designed to give our members a better understanding of
Social Security, what it is, what it provides, possible problems it faces, and the impact
of possible legislative solutions that are being suggested. This is a very important issue
for all of your members and their families. Be sure to distribute this information
throughout the workplace.</p>

<p>What is Social Security?</p>
</b></font><font FACE="Univers">
<p>Social Security is a social insurance program that protects workers and their families
against the loss of earnings that occurs when a worker retires, dies or becomes disabled.
It has been the main source of retirement income, and protection against death or
disability for workers for more than 60 years.</p>
<p>All too often people only think of the retirement benefits when they think of Social
Security. Because of this they tend to think of Social Security as a benefit only to older
Americans. This is not true. Social Security provides protections to workers of all ages. </p>

<p>What type of benefits does Social Security provide and whom are they paid to?

<p>Retirement Benefits:</b></font><font FACE="Univers"> This is the largest source of
retirement income for 2/3 of all retired workers, and is usually the only retirement
income with COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment).</p>
</font><font FACE="Univers" SIZE="4"><b><p>Disability Benefits:</b></font><font FACE="Univers"> Paid to workers and dependents of workers who become too disabled to
continue to work.</p>
