During the 20th century there have been two particularly heinous fates for any nation or people. The lesser of these is to have the U.S. as an enemy. Enemies can sometimes survive. But to have the U.S. as a friend: abandon hope all ye who enter. It isn't myth: back in February of 1968 a Colonel really did announce to a TV camera that they had to destroy the village to save it.
