Yugoslavia and Russia and Hungary

According to the April 6 Moscow News which I have just seen, the CIS volunteers in Yugoslavia are being armed by Poles, despite Poland's official support for the NATO bombing campaign. Apparently these are arms merchants, not ideological. Not clear who is paying the bills for these arms. A lot of the Russian volunteers are associated with Zhirinovsky's party and some are Cossacks. They are reported to be more anti-American than the Serbs, referring to Americans as "jerks" (a polite translation, actually).

According to the Washington Post this morning the 73 vehicle Russian humanitarian convoy to Yugoslavia was blocked by the Hungarians for an extended period of time. A number of vehicles were not allowed through, most especially those with a lot of extra fuel. No bases are being used from Hungary for the air strikes, although overflight has been allowed and flight guidance support is being provided.

Patrick Buchanan in a column raises the spectre of a "Belgrade-Baghdad-Minsk-Moscow-Beijing" axis. Hmmm. He says, come home and rearm to have "Ronald Reagan's military." Oh goody.

Some Congressperson from Illinois is crying for partition. Let the Serbs have their historic sites and monasteries while letting the Albanian sector be linked physically to Albania. This dim bulb has not looked at a map to see that most of the historic sites and monasteries are near the Albanian border in Metohija. Even Albright has figured this one out and ruled out partition. Not a viable solution. Barkley Rosser
