Israel, Russia, and Yugoslavia

Oh, this gets more complicated by the minute. According to the Washington Post, Ariel Sharon is in Russia playing nicey nice with Primakov. Sharon is playing to the Russian immigrant vote in Israel, which is sympathetic to the Russian position on Yugoslavia. Sharon, of course, has been pro-Serb, both out of historical allegiance and also because of the perception that they are fighting Muslim fundamentalists in Kosmet.

A not much noticed aspect of this is that the Russians see the Albanian Kosovars as being like the Chechens. Indeed, according to Moscow News, the CIS volunteers in Yugoslavia claim to expect to be fighting Chechen volunteers on the other side. Murkier and murkier.

BTW, Zhirinovsky is opposing the move to impeach Yeltsin because he has been standing up to the US and for the Serbs in Yugoslavia. Barkley Rosser
