Service Industry Unions

I checked out Liza Featherstone's article on McDonald's and Walmart unionization attempts. Three words that caught my attention in the article were: Unified National Campaign. Surely that is the ticket. The article mentioned that unions have historically shunned "the young, low-wage workers that staff the retail sector". Why would they do that? The article suggests that many young folks, even some with degrees, are going to end up in service positions permanantly. It was also indicated in the story that service industies constitute a huge portion of this booming economy we ALL are supposed to be enjoying. Welfare reform coupled with an crummy, ignored low end labor pool constitutes legalized slavery in my book.
