A friend of mine boasts that he would often run into Christopher Hitchens climbing out of the window of the all-women's college in Oxford (St Catharine's, I think) early in the morning so as to avoid the sex- police...

The most telling profile of Hitchens was his own sardonic swipe at the Socialist Workers Party in a review of some books by Paul Foot in the London (or New York?) review of books about a year ago. Christopher and his brother Peter were both members, so the account carries quite a self-portrait of the young radical between the lines. Peter went on to become a rather engaging Tory, who edited the Daily Express for a while. -- Jim heartfield
