The leadership of NRA is seriously penetrated with ideological racists. Robert Dreyfuss had an article on this a year or so ago; I forget where it appeared. Public Eye has written about it too.

The rank and file of the NRA would obviously be a mixed bag. When I worked in a type shop my supervisor was a gun enthusiast, even though he had blown part of his hand off in an accident. He was a sad guy; wife had left him. His guns were his solace, his number one hobby (he hunted deer). He had a visceral hatred of any pol he suspected was out to deprive him of his avocation. Otherwise there was nothing malign about his politics or psyche, though he once sent his ex-wife's boyfriend a newspaper clipping about hunting. We often discussed radical politics, back when I was to the left of all you milk-sop anti-Stalinist socialists, and he had no hostility to me. We got along just fine. So simple generalizations about the rank-and-file of the NRA are bound to always be wrong.
