John Sweeny has increased the organizing budget of the afl/cio by millions of dollars, has practiced eeoc by bringing women and minorities into the inner circles at the top of the union where they were kept out for years. before becoming head of the afl/cio about 10-12 years ago he hired a bunch of minorities, women, and old lefties to do nationwide organizing for 32BJ, bringing it from the smallest to the largest union in the AFL/CIO. His organizers were responsible for finally getting rid of Gus Bevona who really is a gangster. Maybe sweeny isn't perfect, but he sure as hell is a better leader of the afl/cio -- with more committment to diversity and rank and file organizing -- than anyone else in living memory. maggie coleman mscoleman at aol.com
