Well, at least you will always be able to read what you wrote. No-one will ever take that ability away from you. But that is not the case with the electronically stored writing that needs a machine that "knows" the code. Suppose that some Bill Gates' clone of the future builds a time limit cum encryption scheme into Word - to access your own writing after the expiration date you would need to renew your licence. Pretty Orwellian, no?
