> a paganistic hostility to scientific enquiry.

Bummer -- this isn't the way I remember the sixties at all. To me, the counterculture was a movement characterized by pacifism, egalitarianism, good humor and a humble sense of wonder about the world . I see very few traces of these traits in Western society today.
