Watergate was a very serious blow to the left -- because this (that all leaders were corrupt) was the chief "lesson" so many potential activists drew from that episode. Hence Watergate was a major source of the "vacuum" that Max speaks of. I wonder if Nixon was himself ever aware of the damage he had done us (the left)? Cynicism, no matter its source or direction, is always damaging to leftist politics.
