Back in the early 1980s, the Village Voice quoted an East Village artist as saying, "We're the Duartes of the gentrification movement." Back in the late 1980s, there was a big fight in the neighborhood over the conversion of an old building facing the east end of Tompkins Square Park into upscale apartments (the Christodora is its name); Iggy Pop lives there now.
