Someone on the American Association for Public Opinion Research list
just forwarded figures from the Direct Marketing Association showing
there are 2.3 million people working in consumer telemarketing in the
U.S. (making and taking calls), and another 3 million working
business-to-business - a total of 5.3 million. That's seven times as
many as work in motor vehicle production.
Since there are about 105 million households in the U.S., that means
there's one consumer telemarketer for every 45 households. No wonder
they call so often!
