Do you recall the Black English controversy in Ann Arbor , Michigan (NIMBY in my back yard) in the 70's when a federal judge ordered bilingual ed. ? Around that time a linguistics prof. in Ann Arbor, Robins Burling (anthropologist/linguist) ,told me that some historical trends in English grammar tend toward Black English. Is Labov still a leading scholar in this area ?

Despite much experience, as a linguist I continue to find somewhat astonishing what people will assert about language. For those who might like a good starting point on Ebonics, I recommend the following URL, that of John Rickford.
