It was indeed a sad period.

Huntington, Samuel P. et al. The Crisis of Democracy: Report on the
Governability of Democracies to the Trilateral Commission (NY: NYU Pr., 1975),
p. 98. "Truman had been able to govern the country with the cooperation of a
relatively small number of Wall Street lawyers and bankers.  By the mid-1960s,
the sources of power in society had diversified tremendously, and this was no
longer possible."
