I Luv Anarchists

I've made reference to unwelcome behavior in Seattle by "anarchists." I'd like to acknowledge that the sit-down also owed an important debt to anarchists. It looks to have been very well planned and executed. Without the sit-down, the labor march would have been something of a bore, I'm afraid.

I made my point about discipline and I won't repeat it. Re: Carrol's point about cooperating in coalitions, in fairness it ought to be admitted that organizations of all stripes -- socialist, M-L, liberal, what-have-you -- are capable of being completely pig-headed or otherwise about working with other groups. In general labels don't matter much, though a particular group's ideology usually matters.

I like anarchism the way I like the idea of being 19 again. My roomie and I organized the first Yippie demonstration at Rutgers, before I became "serious." We issued a call for volunteers for the "Peoples' Officers Training Corps." SDS had made ROTC the big radical issue on campus.

A predictable gaggle of partially-capacitated freaks showed up, maybe 100. We began a march downtown to the police station. On the way, one of my English lit profs came running out of Scott Hall, yelling "William Blake! William Blake!"

One of the leaders of the march was a Vietnam Vet. When we got to the police station, he gave a 'speech' which ended with him and a freak running down the American flag, which they spit on. Some cops came running out and arrested the freak. Later we found out the Vet was an undercover cop. A violent psychotic, as it turned out.

It was fun but I got over it.
