Michael Hoover mentioned Carl Oglesby's work. Kirkpatrick Sale expanded on Oglesby's work in, "Power Shift: The Rise Of The Southern Rim And Its Challenge To The Eastern Establishment."

Also another poster offhandedly mentioned the Civil war re-enacters and the Confederate flag. Anyone on the list follow news re:the neo-Confederate, League of the South and the Southern Party and the "white collar Klan" next generation of the "White Citizens Council" a/k/a Council of Conservative Citizens? Right now in South Carolina the NAACP is calling for a boycott of S. Carolina over the stars and bars still on the state flag. The offhand remark on the Confederate flag made me remember a story in the New Yorker about 5 yrs. ago about Michael Hill and the League of the South, that went into a killing of a "good 'ole boy" "Rebel" flag bearing, truck drivin' son of the south. Lurking on the neo-Confederate sites, I see these folks disingeniously deny being racist mofos but, why the deep attachment to a piece of cloth? btw, in college, after Grenada was invaded, three fellow friends of mine in Santa Cruz, went looking for a U.S. flag to burn, as I was climbing up a flagpole, the campus police drove up saying, "Mighty patriotic thing there you're doing boys!" Far as I know, no consequences, to us, in fact, one of our motley crew, is now a lawyer, and as part of his passing the bar and getting licenced, had to certify no felonies, bla, bla, bla. Last word on this, remember the right-wing Congressman, who the night before the election when Dukakis got buried, claimed that Ms. Dukakis had burned a flag in an anti-war demo in the 60's! And, Bob "B-1 Bomber" Dornan claiming Bill Clinton got KGB orders on his trips to Prague and Moscow when he was a Rhodes scholar. Gotta love these nuts!
