Taiwan remains world's major PC supplier
TAIPEI, Taiwan: Taiwan is expected to produce 19.5 million desktop personal
computers this year, supplying about one in every five desktops in the world
market, a government report said Tuesday.
While output increased 42 percent in the first six months of this year, it
rose only 31 percent in the second half, hurt mainly by the devastating
earthquake on September 21, according to the Institute for Information
Industry.
Production was spurred by the popularity of the Internet and low-cost
personal computers and an Asian market recovering from a financial crisis,
it said.
Taiwanese makers mainly supply their computers to major foreign firms such
as Compaq, Dell, Apple and Fujitsu. Taiwan's desktop production is expected
to reach 23.9 million next year and 28 million in 2001, as world market
growth continues to rise on increasing demand from China and India, the
report said. (Associated Press)
