wasn't term 'free love' coined by Oneida community founder John Humphrey Noyes?...and didn't he (and community) repudiate it after it became identified with anti-marriage reformers?...

Oneida 'communized' marriage and eliminated proprietary control of husband over wife, thereby emancipating women as domestic chattels...practice of male continence (coitus reservatus) separated sex from reproduction, thereby protecting women from pregnancy and perils of childbirth...

but Noyes held to inveterate belief in women's moral inferiority... defined as such, it was claimed that women did not expend 'vital energy' in sexual climate to same degree as men...so women were expected to experience orgasm, thereby liberating their sexual pleasure...meanwhile, nonorgasmic sex for men osteneibly strengthened their moral hegemony - for men, sex was process except in instances for which reproduction had been agreed...

only men could initiate sex, women could refuse when asked but they could not ask to have sex with any man...Michael Hoover
