IMO, the point that has value is not that 'the people' are all-knowing and all-wise, just less given to the pernicious, delusive flights of fancy that afflict intellectuals of all political dispositions.

I ran across a nifty, anonymous quote the other day that offers fair warning to everyone who dwells long in the realm of ideas: "Don't believe everything you think."
