N.B. Stoicism is a major theme in the recent Tom Wolfe book, A Man in Full. Light but fun. For all his assorted reactionary prejudices and cliches, Wolfe has a way of drawing persuasive, naturalistic pictures of places to which you'd never have suspected he'd been privy.
